SEL Outcomes for Communities

Our communities are what make us feel belonging; they give us a sense of security, pride, and fellowship with others. We are constantly doing what we can to ensure that our community thrives and provides a safe environment for our youth. But we have to raise children who share this sentiment, this commitment to our community, if we want to continue to see our labors accomplished. Social-emotional learning teaches children the importance of relationships, with those close to them as well as to those that make up their community. Through instruction in compassion, trustworthiness, cultural awareness, and mindfulness (as well as a wide-ranging collection of other lessons), we are raising our children to be more socially-minded, responsible adults.

SEL programs benefit the community through:

  • lower crime rates among youth
  • decrease in “risky behaviors,” such as underage drinking, drug use, and teenage pregnancies
  • decrease in unemployment and generational poverty rates
  • 11:1 return on investment (ROI) from these programs (an average net value of $613,380 per participant)
  • more financial stability and employability

“…if SEL goes up by one standard deviation, earnings go up by 4-15% for each individual student…which indicates very large long-term labor market effects from enhanced SE skills.” 4
