What is Social Emotional Learning -SEL?

Social emotional learning, often abbreviated to SEL, is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goal, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions [CASEL].

Social-emotional skills have been shown to be critical to the overall development of a student’s life. Destructive behaviors, such as drug abuse, violence, bullying, and deficient performance in school, can be prevented or reduced through a combined effort of effective classroom instruction, engagement in hands-on activities, and parental and community involvement……..more

HeartBridge Learning Center – Our Mission

Our Mission

The HeartBridge Learning Center is a collection of hard-working individuals with over thirty-years of experience working with children. In the past eight years, we have experimented with different learning techniques and unique instructional methods to best teach the students of the 21st-Century. Our passion has driven us to find the best way to combine academic instruction with social-emotional learning, so that in our learning lab we can produce responsible and rational young adults. We have built our system on the following foundations:

  1. Developing growth mindsets
  2. Academic relevance
  3. Teaching responsible moral choices
  4. Teaching economic sustainability
  5. Empowering and returning leaders to the community

Spring 2017 Student Social Emotional Survey Statistics

The DATA

The HeartBridge Personal Competencies curriculum was piloted by six Arkansan schools in 2016-17 school year. At the end of the year, a survey was given to all of the students who had completed the curriculum (they will be marked HeartBridge). A control group with similar demographics as the group who were part of the program, but who did not have any social-emotional instruction, also took the survey (they will be marked Non-HB). The results, which will be shown below, show a clear increase in the number of responses which were answered in the positive by the students who were part of the HeartBridge program, compared with that of the control group, Non-HB. This survey was prepared by Panorama Education, a data-resourcing company headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts.
